Getting married in Umbria? The green heart of Italy has a timeless charm: rolling hills, olive groves, stone hill-towns and a light that seems made for photography. To truly keep those memories, though, the choice of photographer is everything — and choosing a local one has more than one advantage. I live in Terni and have photographed weddings across this region for years. This guide covers it all: why Umbria, the best areas and venues, when to marry, what it costs and how I actually work through your day.
What makes Umbria so special for a wedding
Unlike the busier destinations, Umbria puts peace, privacy and authenticity first. Vineyards in Montefalco, villas on Lake Trasimeno, churches in Assisi or Spoleto, abbeys hidden in the Valnerina: intimate settings, natural light and historic architecture, perfect for images that feel elegant and never staged. Here you won't find ten weddings in the same village on the same day — you'll find a castle, a valley and silence. I picked three favourites in the most enchanting locations in Umbria.
Umbria or Tuscany?
It's the question I'm asked most. The honest answer: Umbria offers the beauty of Tuscany without the crowds. The same rolling hills, the same medieval towns, the same golden light — but with less tourism, a gentler pace and, often, lower costs for venues and vendors. Tuscany has an iconic appeal and I love it (I work there often); Umbria, though, stays more intimate, more authentic, more yours. If you dream of a wedding that feels personal rather than picture-postcard, this region is hard to beat.
The best areas and venues in Umbria
Every corner of the region has a different character. These are the areas I know best:
- Assisi and the surrounding hills — abbeys, cloisters and sweeping valley views, for weddings with a spiritual breath and grand landscapes.
- Spoleto and the Valnerina — romantic countryside, historic hamlets and secluded abbeys like San Pietro in Valle, ideal for intimate celebrations.
- Lake Trasimeno — Liberty-style villas and estates on the water, for an elegant day with lakeside sunsets.
- Orvieto and the villages toward the Tuscan border — the tufa-stone city and the estates around it, spectacular for portraits.
- Todi, Montefalco and the wine belt — vineyards, cellars and panoramic terraces.

Why choose a local photographer
Knowledge of the land
I know where and when the light is best, from the alleys of Spello to Orvieto's tufa views, from the terraces of Todi to the vine rows of Trasimeno. I know the corners that aren't on any map, and which country lane to avoid with the guests' cars. When the good light lasts twenty minutes, already knowing where to go is everything.
Familiarity with the venues
I've already worked in many of the region's most loved places — from Castello di Montignano to the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle, from San Pietro Sopra le Acque to the villages near Orvieto: I know the timing, the spaces and how the light behaves in each. That means arriving without surprises and focusing on you rather than on the place.
Smooth, bilingual collaboration
I speak Italian and English: I communicate easily with vendors and with international couples, with no misunderstandings. I coordinate remotely in the months before, and on the wedding day I bridge an Umbrian family and one arriving from abroad — which is often half the fun.
A story with a soul
More than formal portraits, I look for real emotions and unplanned moments: that's where your story lives. A father moved to tears, two witnesses laughing quietly, the light coming through an abbey window just as you say your vows.
How I work through the day
I arrive early, when the house is still in the beautiful mess of getting ready, and I leave when the party is deep into the night. In between I try to disappear: I work in a reportage style, in natural light, with fast lenses that let me keep my distance. I only borrow a few minutes at golden hour for portraits — no endless sessions, no forced poses — and for the rest I let you live your day. I carry two camera bodies and record every frame to two cards: a wedding has no "let's do it again", and the calm of knowing everything is safe comes back to you as freer images.
The best time to marry in Umbria
May, June and September are the ideal months: warm but not scorching days, green hills and long golden evenings perfect for portraits. Early autumn brings the colours of the grape harvest and a beautiful soft light. High summer (July and August) is stunning but hotter — it works well by moving the ceremony and portraits toward late afternoon. April and October offer gentler rates and intense landscapes, with some rain risk to plan for and an indoor plan B. Whatever your season, Umbrian light knows how to be generous.
A photography that looks like you
I adapt the language to your style: from editorial elegance to fine art, to pure reportage. Portraits among the olive trees, reception details, glances during the ceremony — always with the same care, never turning your day into a set. Practical notes: getting there and planning
Umbria sits in the exact centre of Italy, easy to reach by car or train from Rome (about ninety minutes) and Florence. The reference airports are Rome Fiumicino and Perugia (San Francesco d'Assisi) for European flights. My advice, especially for international couples, is to choose a private estate that hosts ceremony, dinner and overnight stay: it makes the weekend more relaxed and immersive, and lets your guests experience Umbria without constant transfers.
What a wedding in Umbria costs
Costs in Umbria tend to be gentler than in the busier destinations, for the same beauty. For photography, an experienced destination professional in Italy generally ranges between €4,000 and €9,000, Italian VAT included, for full-day coverage; I explain every band openly in the destination wedding photography pricing guide. My collections, with up-to-date details, are on the Investment page.
Real weddings in Umbria
The best way to understand how I work is to see whole days, not the three best frames. Here are a few weddings told in full, in the region's venues:
- Martina & Daniele — Castello di Montignano
- Valentina & Thomas — Abbey of San Pietro in Valle
- Micaela & Raffaele — San Pietro Sopra le Acque
You'll find all the wedding stories in the archive.
Where to start
In a destination wedding the photographer is a constant presence: there from morning to night, catching the details and keeping the moments that pass in a breath. That's why they should be booked early, before many other vendors — often right after the venue and planner. The good dates, with only a few weddings a year, go quickly.
