Umbria is a landlocked region, yet one that takes your breath away: rolling hills, calm lakes, medieval hamlets and a deep spiritual heritage — this is where Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi, Saint Rita of Cascia and, by tradition, Saint Valentine of Terni lived. For couples after a ceremony rich in meaning, not just in pretty backdrops, it's a singular place. After many weddings spent criss-crossing it, here are the three areas I love most and why — with a few concrete tips for making the most of them.

Why choose Umbria for the wedding of your dreams

From rustic farmhouses to charming villas, Umbria offers settings for every style, always with an Italian authenticity the more touristy destinations have partly lost. And that spiritual dimension adds depth to a ceremony, religious or symbolic. The practical upside is no small thing: gentler prices than Tuscany, short distances, and venues you don't have to share with ten other weddings. If you're after the right property, start with my guide to over 30 wedding venues in Umbria.

1) Assisi: spirituality and elegance

Set on the slopes of Mount Subasio, Assisi looks out over the valley with a view that, at golden hour, genuinely moves you. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ideal choice for couples after a serene, gathered atmosphere: restored monasteries, noble residences such as Castello di Petrata with its view of the Basilica, and receptions of great refinement. The bond with Saint Francis makes a perfect setting for religious ceremonies, but even those who choose a symbolic rite find a rare scenic power. My advice as a photographer: keep yourselves free at sunset — the pink stone of Subasio and the valley lighting up below the town give portraits no other Umbrian location can.

2) Terni and the Valnerina: the romantic soul

Known as the City of Saint Valentine, Terni is by tradition a symbol of love: in the Basilica of San Valentino, every February, the Festa della Promessa is held, where couples renew or receive a blessing. A winter wedding here has a charm all its own — and low-season rates, without giving up the atmosphere. But the real treasure is all around: the Valnerina, with the Marmore Falls (among the highest in Europe) and hidden abbeys like San Pietro in Valle, in Ferentillo, where I've photographed more than one "I do" in the morning light of the Romanesque cloisters. It's the area for couples who want nature, water and an ancient history underfoot. I live here: if you need someone who knows it inch by inch, you know where to find me.

3) Lake Trasimeno: elegance on the water

Trasimeno inspired poets like Goethe and Byron, and one summer evening on its shores is enough to understand why. The gentle hills around the water create picturesque backdrops: you can say "I do" at golden hour and then celebrate on private islands — Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese are reached by boat — or in castles and villas overlooking the lake, as at Castiglione del Lago. The municipal venues offer competitive prices compared with Tuscany, with civil or symbolic ceremonies. It's the choice for couples who want water and reflections without going all the way to Lake Como. You'll find more ideas on the official portal Umbria Tourism.

Honourable mentions

Three areas aren't enough to contain Umbria. If you're after more character: Orvieto and its tufa cliff, with the cathedral and cellars carved into the rock; Todi, elegant and panoramic, often near the top of "most liveable town" rankings; Montefalco, the "railing of Umbria", among the Sagrantino vineyards; Spoleto, with its Ponte delle Torri and open-air theatres. Each would deserve an article of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hold a legally valid ceremony in these locations?

Yes: several municipalities and some venues are licensed for civil ceremonies, even outdoors. Alternatively, a symbolic ceremony gives you total freedom of place and time, while the papers are signed at the town hall. Foreign couples need the nulla osta from their consulate.

Which area is best for an intimate wedding?

All three suit it: Assisi for the spiritual atmosphere, Terni and the Valnerina for romance and nature, Trasimeno for the lakeside backdrops and private islands. For an elopement of very few people, an abbey or a terrace over the lake is hard to beat.

Is it worth having a photographer who knows these places?

Very much: someone who knows Assisi, Terni and Trasimeno already knows where and when the light is best, and won't waste your golden hour searching for the right angle. I go into it in why to choose a wedding photographer in Umbria.
