The question every couple asks: "What if it rains?". The honest answer is that in Tuscany it can rain in any season, and that the difference between a disaster and one of the loveliest memories of the day comes down to one word: preparation. A good plan B isn't pessimism — it's what lets you relax whatever the sky does.
Understanding Tuscan weather
Spring and autumn bring short, sudden showers; summer is stable but with the odd heat storm; winter is cold and damp. It rarely rains for a whole day: more often it's thirty minutes that, if they don't catch you unprepared, pass and leave magnificent light behind.
Rain as an opportunity, not an enemy
Some of the most intense images I've taken were born in the rain: reflections on the cobbles, clear umbrellas, the intimacy of two people held close under a portico while it pours outside. Rain slows everything down and creates closeness — and it shows.
- Reflections and wet stone: shining stones double the scene and the light.
- Dramatic storms: heavy skies like a painter's backdrop.
- Mist and fog: on the hills, a rarefied atmosphere impossible to recreate with sun.
Indoor venues
The golden rule when choosing a venue: always ask "what's the indoor plan B, and is it as beautiful as the outside?".
- Historic palazzi and villas: frescoed halls, loggias, galleries — often as scenic as the garden.
- Medieval churches and pievi: ancient stone and light from above for the ceremony.
- Cellars and underground spaces: brick, barrels and candles, perfect for an intimate dinner.
Covered outdoor alternatives
You don't have to give up the outdoors: you need covered spaces.
- Renaissance loggias and covered terraces: open to the landscape but sheltered.
- Pergolas and garden pavilions: elegant and quick to set up.
- Courtyards and cloisters: sheltered on the sides, with the sky as a ceiling.
Logistics and decisions
- Clear marquees for the ceremony, booked as an option with the supplier.
- A flexible timeline: a 20–30 minute margin lets you wait out the shower and step into the best light.
- Who decides and when: agree with planner and photographer on a "cut-off time" to choose between outdoor and indoor, so no one improvises at the last minute.
Making the rain beautiful: styling and accessories
- Clear umbrellas (never branded ones): extremely elegant in photos.
- Chic boots for the bride's portraits in the greenery.
- Shawls and blankets for guest comfort, which double as styling details.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if it rains on the wedding day?
The agreed plan B kicks in: ceremony under a loggia or indoors, sheltered portraits and, as soon as it clears, a few minutes outdoors in the clean light. With a margin in the timeline it's handled without stress.
Does rain ruin the photos?
On the contrary: reflections, clear umbrellas and dramatic skies often give the most intense images. You just need the right gear and mindset.
How do I choose a "rain-proof" venue?
Check there's an indoor or covered space as beautiful as the outside and big enough for all the guests. It's the number-one question to ask on a site visit.
